Ryanair’s Canary Island Expansion to Boost Tourism, say Dealchecker.co.uk

The low cost airline is set to increase the number of air passengers to the Canary Islands with the announcement of 35 new routes to the popular holiday destination.

(PRWeb UK) December 16, 2010

Ryanair is set to continue its €400 million investment in the Canary Islands with the announcement that it is to open three new bases in the area from February, say Dealchecker.co.uk. The bases, which are to be constructed in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife, will hold up to six planes, carry 4.5 million passengers annually and operate on 112 routes; 35 of which will be new ones, specially created as part of Ryanair’s tourism drive in the Canary Islands.

Alex Saint, CEO of dealchecker.co.uk says: “Ryanair’s on-going investment in the Canary Islands is not only good news for travellers, but also for everyone involved in the travel industry there, as this campaign will not only allow our customers to fly to the islands, but also help to create and sustain more than 4,500 jobs, such as cabin crew, pilots, engineers and travel reps.”

This campaign by Ryanair follows a dip in tourists flying to the Canary Islands from 2007-2009, when the airline flew just 300,000 passengers to holiday destinations in the islands. But since the Spanish parliament and the Canary Islands government announced that they were to concentrate on improving air traffic growth to the area by reducing airport charges for 2010 and 2011, the airline have decided that more of an investment is needed to restore passenger numbers to 4.5 million, which will restore all of the traffic lost by the Canary Islands from 2007-2009.

Saint continues: “Tourism in the Canary Islands and many other countries has suffered over recent years due to the challenging economic climate. However, the government of the Canary Islands have taken steps to rectify this with the reduction of air traffic charges, but they have also recently announced the creation of the Regional Marketing Fund, which will begin in 2013 and will continue to support air traffic growth to the islands, and could hopefully encourage more people to fly to this great holiday destination.”
